You see that? That is a chart of the quests in each Mass Effect game, broken down in multiple tiers and categories. I’ll give you a minute to read over it fully and let it sink in.
Done yet?
Okay, cool.
Another one of what I feel are the primary issues with ME3 is the complete and…
My issue with it too :/ They missed SO MANY amazing opportunities for us to help other races/planets with the war. It was just sloppy & lazy… like the ending -ha. *sadface*
THE THANE THING THOUGH. IF THAT’S REAL, I AM SO DISAPPOINTED IN THE BIOWARE COMMUNITY. OH MAN.
I don’t believe the fan base had anything to do with the crap in the game at all. As Bioware said, the script that was leaked was incomplete. They changed things before the leak.
There was no way between the time that was leaked and the time that game had to go to final quality testing, that they would have had time to change things. There is an estimated 6-8 weeks before a game is officially released that it has to be done beginning to end. How do you think a full copy of Halo 4 got leaked, including a full green box with detailed discs, 4 weeks before it’s release date?
The changes mentioned between the script and the final product were not because of fan complaining, but because Bioware wanted to change it. The entire game sucks because of Bioware’s bad decisions. Quit trying to shift the blame to someone else, Bioware was never perfect.
Remember how they released statistics after ME2 was release. They explored player hours, what gender Shepard did people play as, what loyalty quests they did first, what romances were the most popular, etc. They already had ME3 planned out before that. I believe they changed things based on the data they gathered from ME2.
Because they found there were more players playing male Shepard, they made sure he had plenty of available romances and geared it towards male players over all as much as possible.
Because they found out that the few female Shepard players tended for lesbian romances, they made sure she had plenty of same sex romances.
Because they found most players picked option 1 or option 3, they cut out the middle ground option 2.
Because people skipped through most of the dialogue, they made most of the dialogue in ME3 auto-dialogue. (You can even see that in the E3 demo of 2011, there was far more dialogue options, including middle ground options when rescuing Eve.)
Because Jacob and Thane were the least popular based on these statistics, they got the most minor roles in the game.
They tried to streamline and make their job easy with ME3, tried to make it enjoyable for the majority and it only failed. Instead of widening their audience, they limited it and ruined the game. Every time a game developer talks about statistics, the next game is almost guaranteed awful because that means their cutting a lot of stuff out. Just look at Fable 3.
Also there is strong indication in the game itself that the Bioware team were not working together any more. Which is no surprise, so many writers left and new ones came in. Topple that with EA’s involvement and demands, I would doubt the writers were the only ones coming and going. Different people believed they had the best idea and wouldn’t listen to others, that’s why people left and that’s why the game is a mess. In the ending itself shows this the strongest. There is the segment someone forced in where you get to talk to the supporting characters for the last time, they must have realized the ending was going to result in some rage. Talking to the ME2 characters over the com feels seriously tacked on in the worst way and if you’re not careful, you can completely miss it because it’s off to the side in a hidden room.
Then you have this random forced segment of rail gun shooting. It’s like someone said, all this talking is boring, let’s put in some stupid action for no apparent reason cause that’s cool.
Finally, you have the actual closing that diverges off in a complete different direction from everything and I don’t have to tell you whats wrong. You all know already.
I believe if you seriously look at the entire game, you will see the same pattern of the Bioware team being split on what kind of game they wanted ME3 to be. Split between failed attempts at pleasing fans and doing things right, stupid action and shock value, and someones special Jesus Christ motif vision cause they thought the Matrix and Deus Ex was awesome and think they can be deep like that.

Reblogging for great commentary on why the leaked script and subsequent BSN “whining” were not the downfall of ME3.
